In September 1943, a group of Australian operatives launched a daring raid on Japanese shipping in Singapore Harbour. Long regarded as the greatest Australian commando operation of the Second World War, the mission - Operation Jaywick - triggered a merciless response from Japan’s feared military police, the Kempei Tai. What followed was one of the darkest moments in Singaporean history and the worst atrocities of the Pacific War. This talk explores the far-reaching consequences of the raid, focusing on the brutal crackdown that ensnared innocent civilians and internees. At the heart of this story are Elizabeth Choy, a fearless schoolteacher who at enormous personal risk participated in a complex smuggling operation to aid internees in Changi Jail, and Robert Heatlie Scott, a British diplomat whose survival defied the odds only to face renewed torment in one of the Kempei Tai's interrogation centres. Through their eyes, we delve into the psychological and physical horrors of their incarceration, where truth became a battleground and survival demanded unimaginable courage.
